Mentor Program

The Purpose

The Mentor Program addresses the transition new students go through when coming to the Computer Science graduate program at Virginia Tech. To ensure that every incoming student has a smooth transition, all new students are paired with a current student mentor. Mentors are assigned to no more than two new students and they help answer any questions and concerns a new student may have regarding graduate life.

FAQs

What is the Mentorship Program?

The Mentorship Program was initiated for incoming CS graduate students. This program pairs up incoming graduate students with current students, giving new students an initial contact within the department and someone to go to when questions arrise. Each mentor will be assigned 1-2 new graduate students. The mentor will be available to answer any questions and concerns that the student may have regarding graduate life. We would like to try and match up mentees with mentors based on their areas of interest. This will help the new students get more information about their research areas by informal and friendly communication with their mentors. Since a large number of incoming students have moved to Blacksburg from elsewhere, we also encourage mentors to help their mentees get socially "active" in their new homes in Blacksburg.

Can I be a mentor?

We seek current CS graduate students who are willing to serve as mentors to new students. This program will require very little of your time and will be a tremendous help to the new students. If you are interested in participating in this program, or need more details, please contact us at gradcouncil@cs.vt.edu.

All right, I am interested in being a mentor/mentee. What information do I need to send?

We are generating a list of contact information for the mentoring program. We need to get the following information from each of you.

  1. Whether you want to be a mentor (second year or more grad students) or a mentee (new grad students)
  2. Your name
  3. Preferred email address
  4. Area(s) of Interest

What does area of interest mean?

An area of interest means that you have some information about the research in that area. What is more important is your willingness to guide a new student interested in that area, and provide him with some useful insight. A mentor may have multiple areas of interest, in that case, do indicate all of those areas groups. We would try our best to match up the mentees and mentors with similar interests. Some example areas of interest are as follows: Human-Computer Interaction, Networking, Digital Libraries, Software Engineering, Algorithms, and Bioinformatics.
