Graduate Council Meeting, 03-17-05, 4:00 pm, MCB 655

• In response to short notice about graduate recruiting weekend, we discussed the need for more advanced notice of events with which we are expected to help. We will raise this issue with the department.
• We discussed the potential for having a paid position for a graduate student representative. This idea resulted from increases in the number requests made of the graduate council and decreases in student participation.
• GA position, interview process for 2^nd year plus students

• Recruit a student advisory board for overseeing decisions with a minimum number of members
• Responsibility and access to funding, example of GSA leadership positions
• Graduate recruitment weekend
• Recruitment in general, would include travel and recruitment fairs

• We allocated travel funding to 7 applicants. Unfortunately, we had to turn down three applicants (according to our travel fund policy: http://csgrad.cs.vt.edu/gradCouncil/travelFund.htm) because of the large demand and limited funds.

Action Items:

• Partha will ask Dr. Kafura for 10 minutes of time at the next faculty meeting to present our ideas for a new graduate assistantship position.
• Jon will create a PowerPoint presentation for the faculty.
