Grad Council Meeting:
Location and Time
The following members were present:
Issues discussed
1. Treasurer’s post – We have a new treasurer, Hussein Vastani. Hussein will contact Marc to have the appropriate accounts put in his name. Jon will update the appropriate information on the web site.
2. Dues – Hussein will collect dues. He will email the gradstudents@cs.vt.edu list with information about when to pay dues. He will include a statement specifying that dues are optional, but necessary. Due collection will most likely take place during the back to school social.
3. Research space and lockers – The lockers have been allocated. There were more lockers than requests, so everyone who applied received a locker. In addition, the Graduate Council reserved three lockers for their own storage needs. Research space will be allocated in the next week.
4.
5. Back to school social – Our faculty representative is no longer able to hold the social. We are still waiting on faculty support. Depending on the funds that we have, we may have a social with pizza by the duck pond. Hussein will be responsible for determining if we have enough funds.
6. Grad lab printers – Divya is talking with the tech staff about implementing the printing policy that has been detailed in previous meeting minutes.
7. Sumit talked with Dr. Ribbens about the research seminars. The first presenters will be professors in the CS department, particularly new faculty. The department plans to bring in two to three guest lecturers this semester; the plans for next semester are not yet determined. Sumit will contact Will Lee to get permissions for the research.cs.vt.edu.
8. The computer for TAs in MCB 133 has been replaced, and the printer in MCB 133 is now functional.
9. The auto-logoff timeout for grad lab machines is set at 30 minutes.
10. Zhiyan Shao’s machine in MCB 656 is making a funny noise – Because the machine is still 100% functional, the Graduate Council will not allocate Zhiyan a new machine. Sourabh will email him with more detailed information.
11. Kristin attended the faculty meeting. They discussed the desired specialty areas for new faculty.
12. Travel funding for Max Moldenhauer, Choudhry Zaki Malik – We have the professors’ emails of recommendation, but do we have the students’ forms.
13. Sourabh will talk with Ginger Clayton about the graduate lab. Students would like to keep the copier for personal use and get rid of the typewriter.
14. Sourabh will also talk with Ginger Clayton about the possibility of making research space for graduate students from Peter DePasquale’s office.
