CS Grad Council Meeting Minutes – Mon., Nov 26, 2001

Meeting called to order at 5:10 Present: Wendy, Marc, Pete, Ameya, and Josh

Awards and Recognition

· Pete will re-send the faculty mail

· Meeting in 3 days

Robert France Update

· Problem seems to be worse than originally believed

· An operation had been planned, but now seems to be unfeasible

· Robert is being sent to Duke

Faculty Meeting

· Marc says there have been no recent meetings

· Ameya says one is upcoming

Interior

· Josh says a cleanup will be scheduled for next week

· Service call has been made for the copier

· Lab has been too hot lately; can we fix it?

CRC

· Josh says computers in basement will be replaced next year

· Upgrades for McBryde 565 machines?

o Trying to get RAM upgrades for older 565 machines

· CSGRAD upgrades are coming after the faculty upgrades.

o Need for more immediate additions in future clones:

· Solution to machine locking in labs:

o After 15 minutes, screensaver kick-in will automatically log user out of WINNT

· Exceed should be installed, if it is not already.

Strategic Plan

· Josh says that, because no computer infrastructure consideration was included in the strategic plan for the department, one is now being drafted.

o A first draft has been made

o Addresses the need for flexible research space

· This brought up the fact that a grad student computer requirement was being considered. Feelings were mixed about this requirement, although it was agreed that some courses (networking, operating systems, etc.) by their nature require access to greater resources than would be available in a home setting.

GTA Rankings

• Ameya says that GTA rankings have been done.
• For students with MS degrees from foreign universities, if you don’t pass the qualifiers, your funding is cut off until you do.
• Recruiting (?)

Seminar Series

• Friday, an outside speaker is coming to speak (and recruit) from Sun Research Labs.
• Dr. North and Aarthi will be meeting this week
• Ameya will send out a note about the bioinformatics group

Grad Student Meetings

· Ameya wants to schedule an evening meeting soon to get all the grad students together to talk. Such a meeting was planned for this Wednesday evening. Wendy will order subs & reserve the room for 6pm. Agenda:

Miscelaneous

• Ameya says that Dr. Schafer disagrees with the suggestion for a greater number of generalized courses. He thinks we should have more specialized courses.
• Ginger is looking into options for new gradlab staplers, etc.
• Dr. Kafura should be invited to one of our meetings very soon.
