CS Grad Council Meeting Minutes – Mon., Aug 27, 2001

Secretary – Pete Schoenhoff

 

The meeting was brought to order at 6:10 pm.  Members present were Ameya Datey, Vinoth Jagannathan, Wendy Schafer, Pete Schoenhoff, Josh Steele, and Marc Vass.

 

Wendy wanted to know if everyone knew what meetings to go to and when, for our representation in other student/faculty bodies.  Everybody replied that they either knew already or would find out.

 

Vinoth cannot go to the Sept. 6th meeting of the GSA.  Wendy will go in his place.

 

Josh: Everyone must reapply for research space.  He has sent out forms.  They are due Monday Sept. 3.  Vinoth will help to review them when they come in.

 

Wendy will coordinate the election of a new student representative to the council.

 

Social

  • Wendy will look into a picnic at a public place; she suggested
    burgers and veggie-bugers.
  • Josh suggested a “mentor-mentee” social
  • Other ideas:
    • indoor pool party (swimming) when it gets cold
    • hiking (Cascades, Dragon’s Tooth)
    • luncheons
    • bowling & shoot pool
    • ice skating

 

First guest speaker for the lecture series is Ben Keller, Sept. 5.

 

Pete: Early survey results are coming in.  They are online.  (Grad Council members can email Pete if they need to know where to view the results.)

 

The deletion of old csgrad accounts is probably already complete.

 

The overcrowding issue in the department was discussed, but no official conclusion reached.

 

Two issues regarding class scheduling and student prioritization were briefly discussed.  No conclusion or resolution was reached, but some people seemed disturbed by each issue.  They were:

  • GTAs getting priority over non-GTAs in enrolling for courses
  • PhD students automatically being enrolled in the Research Methods course
