Attendees:  Robert Capra, Nathan Conklin, Wendy Schafer,  Mir Farooq Ali, Chad Wingrave

Not present: Pankaj Poddar, Vijay Hanumolu, Tracy Lewis

Meetings:  Our next meeting will be March 15th, 2001.

Awards
Chad reported on the awards committee activities.

Social
The ice skating went well.  We have decided to have another open luncheon in late March and to start trying to find faculty to host the Festive Ethnic Dinner.  Wendy will be heading up the planning for these activities.  We decided that it would be good if we could find a faculty member to host the ethnic dinner since that would probably encourage more faculty to attend.  Wendy is also going to explore another bowling night, and a hiking trip.  Pending a report from the treasurer, we will decide if we have enough funds to subsidize these events.  Rob mentioned that he and Jason Zwolak *may* try to host a scavenger hunt if they have time to organize it.

Grad Lab Closing
We discussed and support the closing of the grad lab during spring break to fix the electrical problems as long as computing resources are availible to all grad students in McBryde 133.

565 and Brodie
We are going to encourage the students with space in 565 and Brodie to select "room leaders" who will be a point of contact for setting up equipment and helping to organize the students in these spaces to "help themselves" fix problems.  This is to help empower students and encourage them to play a greater role in helping set up the computers and work environments.  The grad council will still be involved in helping and coordinating efforts.

Equipment list
We decided to create a list of all the students who have research space and what computing equipment they have (including serial numbers).  The purpose of this list will be to help resolve issues where there is some question about who is supposed to have what equipment.  We will create a form that each student will fill out that lists information about the equipment, ethernet address, hostname, etc. Nathan has encouraged some of the students in Brodie to do this.  We will use the information they collected as the basis for creating the form.  This information will be shared with the CRC.  We will ask students to sign the form and agree that they will let department know ASAP if anything happens to the equipment that is assigned to them.  We did not feel comfortable having the students sign something saying that they would be completely responsible for the equipment since they are in areas that many people have access to.

Faculty
Nathan reported on the results of the recent faculty meeting.  The faculty voted to adopt "option 2" for the qualifier changes, which aims to test research abilities.

CRC
Chad will be attending the CRC meeting this Friday since Farooq cannot make it.   We developed a list of broad concerns about the state of computing and administration that Chad will be taking to the meeting.

GPC
Rob will be attending the GPC meeting this Friday since Tracy cannot make it.  The GPC will be working on revisions to the text of the Ph.D. qualifier changes that were voted on during the last faculty meeting.

Constitution
Next meeting we will be talking about changes to the Grad Council Constitution.  Nathan has requested that everyone submit a new description of the responsibilities of their positions.

Elections
The elections process for next year's grad council will start on March 25th. Nominations will be taken from March 25th until March 29th.  We will request that all nominees meet with the grad council either at our regular meeting on March 29th (at noon) or at a special meeting on March 31st.  The purpose of the nominees meeting with us is to help inform them of what it means to be on grad council and what the various positions do.  This will help people decide if they would like to run for president.  The elections will be held starting on April 1st and ending on April 4th.  Results will be announced on April 6th.  Rob Capra has stated that he will not be running for any grad council position next year and has offered to be the election coordinator.
