Objective:
This meeting was designed to discuss status of several pending issues.
Results of Meeting with Drs. Schuetz and Kafura
· Drs. Kafura and Schuetz approved the Mentoring Program. The following action items resulted from that meeting:
Action Item Status Seek volunteers amongst current CS grad students. Complete; 25 volunteered, including Grad Council members; 22 will actively participate.
Generate letter to mentors discussing their roles as a mentor. Complete; first draft of letter presented at this meeting.
Schedule mentor meeting to discuss above. Complete; mentor meeting scheduled for August 17, 2000 at 4 p.m.
Generate letter to students, giving mentor assignment. Complete; first draft of letter presented at this meeting.
Meet with Dr. Shaffer to discuss updating GPC site. Complete.
Meet with Dr. Schuetz to discover additional course offerings for Fall 2000. Complete.
Meet with Sharon Donahue to coordinate mentor assignments. Complete.
Meet with Gay Meredith to discuss online form Complete; online form for CSGRAD accounts pending.
Meet with Chris Arnold/Dan Hagan to discuss creating guest accounts for new students to Complete; guest accounts register using CSGRAD. against university policy.
Coordinate Mentoring program with Chinese, Turkish, and Indian Student Associations. Pending.
Seminar Series
· Dr. Ramakrishnan was our guest, and discussed the merits of a weekly seminar series.
· All students conducting research will be strongly encouraged to attend.
· Some faculty have committed to attending as well.
· Grad Council members will attempt to attend at least ½ of seminars.
· Seminar series will be coordinated with ACM (President: Alex Verstak).
Mentoring Program
· First draft of mentor and student letters were presented to Grad Council.
· Graduate Council needs to convey the importance of responsible freedom of expression.
· New draft of mentor letter will be presented to entire Council before being sent to Dr. Schuetz for approval.
· Sharon will randomly make mentor assignments, first assigning students to mentors who will be present during orientation.
Graduate Council Fundraiser
· Grad Night at the Movies scheduled for August 12, 2000.
· Pankaj will organize.
· Admission will be $1.50; $2.50 for both features.
· Movies shown at 7:00 and 9:00 p.m.
· Selected movies are: Good Will Hunting and The Matrix.
Action Items
· Finalize mentor and student letters for approval and distribution.
· Seek approval for fundraiser from Sandy Birch.
· Seek volunteers for 655 and 133 furniture moves.
